Project Big Cat Highlights Ontario’s Auto Theft Problem

Ontario continues to face a rise in vehicle theft and trafficking, and a recent investigation shows just how organized these crimes have become. In November, Hamilton Police announced major findings from Project Big Cat, a multi-agency auto theft investigation. The operation involved Hamilton Police’s Break and Enter, Auto Theft and Robbery (B.E.A.R.) Unit working in partnership with Équité Association, the Ministry of Transportation, the Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council (OMVIC) and neighbouring police services.

According to the official police release, investigators identified a Hamilton based dealership, Bengal Auto, as being allegedly involved in trafficking stolen vehicles over several years. Police allege that stolen vehicles were fraudulently registered through the dealership and that vehicle identification numbers were cloned or altered to appear legitimate. This type of cloning allows stolen vehicles to circulate undetected, often ending up in private sales where unsuspecting buyers believe the car is legitimate.

What Investigators Discovered

During the course of Project Big Cat, police identified more than 36 stolen vehicles with an estimated value of $2.7 million. Out of those, 23 vehicles were successfully recovered across Ontario. A 30 year old man is now facing 15 charges including trafficking in property obtained by crime, fraud, use of forged documents, possession of property obtained by crime and altering or removing a vehicle identification number.

How Ontarians Can Protect Themselves When Buying a Vehicle

As auto theft becomes increasingly sophisticated, police are encouraging residents to do proper research before buying or selling a vehicle. They recommend using trusted resources such as: OMVIC, Government of Ontario vehicle information, and Équité Association.

These organizations provide guidance on vehicle history checks, legal requirements for sales, consumer protection and how to identify suspicious activity. Taking these steps can help prevent buyers from unknowingly purchasing a cloned or stolen vehicle.

Why Driveway Theft Is Still a Major Issue

While investigations like Project Big Cat highlight the importance of careful research during the buying process, homeowners also play a role in protecting vehicles already in their possession. Many thefts in Ontario occur directly from driveways, often within minutes. Organized theft crews use relay attacks, signal amplifiers or simply target unprotected driveways where they can extract a vehicle quickly and quietly.

How Driveway Bollards Help Stop Theft

This is where driveway bollards offer meaningful protection. A secured, properly installed steel bollard creates a physical barrier that prevents a vehicle from being driven away, even if thieves manage to access the keys or bypass the vehicle’s electronic systems. Thieves rely on speed and convenience. Any obstruction that slows them down increases the likelihood they abandon the attempt entirely.

More homeowners across the GTA are choosing driveway bollards to add a protective layer that complements other measures such as motion lighting, tracking devices and surveillance cameras. A bollard cannot be hacked or electronically bypassed, which makes it a reliable solution against modern theft techniques.
