Car Theft in Toronto: What the Latest Numbers Mean for Your Driveway

If you have been following the news, you have probably seen headlines saying car theft in Toronto is going down. That is true. It is also true that Toronto is still the most expensive city in Ontario for auto theft, and that thousands of vehicles are still being taken from GTA driveways every year.
So is it still worth protecting your car? Here is what the numbers actually say, and what it means for homeowners.
Quick Answer: Is Car Theft Still a Problem in Toronto?
Yes. Auto theft in Toronto has dropped from its peak, but it remains well above where it was before the theft wave started. Toronto police recorded more than 7,000 auto thefts in 2025, and Toronto had the highest auto theft claims costs in Ontario. Trucks and higher-end SUVs parked in residential driveways are still common targets.
What the Latest Numbers Show
Thefts are down
According to Toronto Police data reported by blogTO, auto thefts in the city dropped from 9,664 in 2024 to 7,305 in 2025, with the largest decline in residential areas. Across Ontario, the Équité Association reported that thefts in the first half of 2026 were down another 8.4 per cent from the same period in 2025.
But costs are still high
The Insurance Bureau of Canada reported that Ontario auto theft claims totalled $485 million in 2025, down from $723 million the year before but still far above 2017 levels. Toronto was the costliest city in the province at more than $114 million, followed by Brampton and Mississauga.
The targets have not changed
Investigators continue to point to pickup trucks, SUVs and newer models as the vehicles thieves want most. If one of those is in your driveway, you are still in the group most likely to be targeted.
Why the Drop Does Not Mean You Are Safe
Fewer thefts overall does not change the odds much for the vehicles thieves prefer. A few things are worth keeping in mind:
- The numbers are still above pre-crisis levels. Thousands of vehicles a year is still a lot of driveways.
- Organized groups adapt. As police focus on one method, thieves move to another, whether that is relay attacks, plugging into the vehicle’s diagnostic port, or breaking into homes for keys.
- Recovery is not guaranteed. Many stolen vehicles are never returned to their owners, and insurance claims take time and can raise premiums.
How Car Thieves Work in the GTA
Most residential thefts follow the same pattern. The vehicle is chosen ahead of time, often while it sits in a driveway. Thieves come back at night, get the vehicle running using electronic tools or a stolen fob, and drive it straight off the property. The whole thing can take a few minutes.
That last step is the one that matters most. Electronic protections can be beaten. Driving the car off the driveway is the one part every theft depends on.
What Police Recommend
Toronto police continue to recommend layered protection, including an ignition kill switch, a visible steering wheel lock and a tracking system. Those are good steps. They make the vehicle harder to start or easier to find after it is gone.
A bollard works differently. It does not care whether the thief has the fob or has cloned the signal. If the vehicle cannot physically leave the driveway, the theft does not happen.
Where Driveway Bollards Fit In
Residential bollards are steel posts installed at the front of your driveway, set in a concrete footing, that block a vehicle from being driven out. When you need to leave, you lower or remove them.
- Automatic bollards rise and lower using a remote or app, so you never have to get out of the car. See automatic bollard options.
- Manual retractable bollards lock with a key and lower into the ground.
- Removable bollards lift out of a ground sleeve and are a lower-cost option for many driveways. See removable bollard options.
You can compare the options in more detail on our types of residential bollards page.
A Simple Car Theft Prevention Checklist
- Park in a garage if you have one, and keep the garage locked.
- Store key fobs in a Faraday pouch, away from doors and windows.
- Use a visible steering wheel lock.
- Consider an aftermarket tracker or kill switch.
- Light your driveway and add a camera that covers it.
- Install bollards so the vehicle cannot be driven off the property.
