Bollard Maintenance 101: How to Keep Your Bollards in Top Shape
Bollards are designed to take a beating. That’s the whole point. But being built tough doesn’t mean they’re maintenance-free. Like any piece of equipment that sits outside year-round and occasionally gets hit by a car, bollards need some attention to stay in good working order.
Here’s what basic bollard maintenance looks like and when it makes sense to bring in a professional.
Start with a Visual Inspection
Get into the habit of walking past your bollards regularly and taking a closer look every few months. You’re checking for a few things:
Visible damage. Dents, cracks, chips in the finish, or any sign the bollard has been struck. Minor cosmetic damage is usually fine, but anything that affects the structure of the post warrants a closer look.
Movement or leaning. A properly installed bollard should not move. If you notice any wobble or if the post looks like it’s shifted from its original position, that’s a sign the footing may have been compromised.
Rust or corrosion. Surface rust on steel bollards can usually be addressed with a rust-inhibiting primer and touch-up paint before it becomes a deeper problem. Ignore it long enough and you’re looking at a much bigger repair.
Ground level around the base. Frost heave, settling, and water pooling around the base can all affect a bollard’s stability over time. Make sure the area around each bollard drains properly and that the concrete collar hasn’t cracked or pulled away.
Cleaning Is Simple but Worth Doing
Bollards don’t need any special cleaning products. A bucket of soapy water and a brush is usually enough to keep them looking clean and to remove road salt, grime, and other buildup that can accelerate corrosion. In the GTA, road salt is a real factor through the winter months, so a rinse-down after the season is a good habit.
Automatic Bollards Need More Attention
If you have retractable or automatic bollards, the maintenance checklist gets a bit longer. These systems have mechanical components that need periodic servicing to stay reliable.
A few things to keep an eye on:
- Cycle count. The more frequently an automatic bollard is raised and lowered, the more wear it accumulates on the internal mechanism. High-traffic applications need more frequent servicing than low-use ones.
- Unusual sounds or slow movement. If the bollard is taking longer than usual to rise or lower, or if you hear grinding or resistance, don’t ignore it. These are early warning signs that something needs attention.
- Water ingress. The housing sleeve that the bollard sits in needs to drain properly. If water is pooling inside, it can cause corrosion and damage to the electrical components.

Some maintenance is genuinely DIY-friendly, like cleaning and basic visual checks. But anything involving the structural integrity of the installation, the electrical components of an automatic system, or significant corrosion is worth handing off to someone who knows bollards.
