The most stolen car of 2021: The Honda CRV

Attention Ontario drivers of Honda CR-Vs or Lexus RX Series vehicles: Ensure your doors are securely locked, as these models have claimed the top spots on the list of the most stolen automobiles in Ontario for 2022. The not-for-profit Équité Association recently unveiled its annual compilation of the top 10 most stolen vehicles in Canada and its provinces.

For the second consecutive year, the Honda CR-V earned the unfortunate distinction of being the most stolen model nationwide. Notably, all the top 10 stolen vehicles in Ontario were predominantly 2019 models or newer. Équité highlights that criminals often target newer makes to maximize their profits.

In 2022, auto thefts in Ontario surged to a historic high, marking a nearly 50 percent increase. This alarming rise has garnered international attention, positioning Canada as a notable source country for illegal trade, according to Équité Association. Terri O’Brien, President & CEO of Équité Association, emphasized the need for a collaborative approach involving auto manufacturers, government at all levels, and law enforcement to address this ongoing national auto theft crisis.

How to Protect your Vehicle

To mitigate the risk of car theft, Équité suggests common-sense precautions such as keeping car doors locked at all times, never leaving keys in the ignition or starting the vehicle remotely, ensuring windows are closed, and parking in well-lit areas. For added protection, drivers can take further steps, including installing anti-theft devices, vehicle immobilizers, residential bollards and investing in tracking systems.

Highlighting the urgency of the situation, the York Regional Police launched an auto-theft prevention campaign in September, providing details on which vehicles were most likely to be targeted by thieves in the region. Police identified vehicle models in York Region, such as the Toyota Highlander, Lexus RX350, Jeep Wrangler, Dodge Ram 1500, and GMC Yukon, as the most targeted.

Stay informed and take proactive measures to safeguard your vehicle in light of these concerning trends.
