1,000 Stolen Cars Recovered in Toronto

1000 stolen cars recovered

Toronto police have successfully recovered over 1,000 vehicles that were stolen from local residents, marking the conclusion of an extensive year-long investigation into car thefts.

The operation, known as Project Stallion, was active from November 2022 to September 2023, leading to the retrieval of 1,080 vehicles with a total estimated value exceeding $59 million, as disclosed by Superintendent Ron Taverner.

Moreover, this initiative has resulted in the filing of 553 charges against 228 individuals, including at least 20 who are under the age of 18. Superintendent Taverner emphasized the significance of these outcomes, highlighting the city’s commitment to addressing the issue.

Nonetheless, it’s important to recognize that many city residents may never see their stolen vehicles again, impacting their feelings of safety and security.

The conclusion of Project Stallion arrives as Toronto continues to grapple with an increase in vehicle thefts. In 2023 alone, a staggering 9,747 vehicles were reported stolen in the city. During the course of this investigation, more than 3,500 vehicles were stolen within just two police divisions, specifically those covering Etobicoke and North West Toronto.

Additionally, this development follows the recent announcement that the Ontario Provincial Police and Toronto police forces are establishing a collaborative provincial task force to combat the surge in carjackings. It was revealed that over 300 carjackings were reported in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) this year, with more than 200 of them occurring within Toronto.

Superintendent Taverner assured the public that addressing this issue remains a top priority for law enforcement in the community.

Many Thefts Involve Young People

“Young individuals are frequently involved in these thefts,” according to law enforcement.

Police note that the culprits are becoming progressively younger. While isolated thefts occur, the focus of police efforts is shifting towards uncovering the larger, organized groups behind these operations.

The motive behind these thefts primarily revolves around financial gain. It’s a profitable enterprise, with stolen vehicles being resold domestically and even shipped overseas. Superintendent Taverner highlighted that approximately 95% of the recovered cars were found within Canada, and a significant number were in the process of being transported to Montreal.

Although numerous arrests have been made and charges filed, most of those apprehended are considered to be on the lower end of the criminal spectrum. Unraveling the complex hierarchy and identifying the masterminds remains a formidable challenge for law enforcement.

Chief Myron Demkiw emphasized that this project is just one of several strategic, intelligence-driven initiatives implemented to combat the issue of auto theft in Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

He called upon car manufacturers and the shipping industry to join forces in addressing the problem, asserting that the police represent just one facet of the solution. Demkiw stressed the need for a collaborative effort involving multiple stakeholders to curb the flow of stolen goods from the country to foreign destinations, recognizing the intricate nature of enforcement in this regard.

How to Protect Your Vehicle

There our various methods to protect your vehicle from theft. Here are few ideas:

Steering Wheel Locks

Wheel locks can deter theft because the wheel is locked into place and the thief would not be able to drive the car. This is an easy way to protect your vehicle wherever you go, whether its in your driveway, or in a parking lot.

One thing you should keep in mind about wheel locks is some companies use a universal key, which means that anyone with that same wheel lock could unlock your wheel. Also, if your vehicle has tinted windows, the thief may still break into your car since they are unable to see the wheel lock. On the plus side, they are more likely not to steal your car with the wheel lock in place, as it would require more effort and time to steal your car, which the thief probably doesn’t have time for.

Residential Bollards

This is a new and increasingly popular solution to car theft. These steel posts are installed at the end of your driveway, preventing anyone from driving off with your car. They are retractable, so you are able to control who goes in and out of your driveway.

These bollards come in various styles and types. You can get automated bollards which retract automatically with a remote. You can also get a nice style to match your house. For more information on residential bollards, contact us today.

Park Your Car In The Garage

Video Surveillance System

Having a quality video surveillance system is one way you can deter thieves from stealing your vehicle. However, there are many cases of thieves still stealing cars even if the house has security cameras. It may not be enough to deter someone from stealing your car, but it will certainly help with the investigation, as well as proof for your insurance company.

Although car thefts are increasing steadily over the last few years in the Greater Toronto Area, there are still options available to protect your car. It can be nerve racking leaving your car unattended, so to ease your mind, we recommend doing what you can to protect your car by using one, or multiple, of the methods listed above.
